SOUNDBITE (Dutch), Annemie TURTELBOOM, Belgian Minister of Internal Affairs, We know that the Parliament is very concerned about these profiling of data. The Commission is going to explain exactly what that entails. Profiling should not lead to people of a certain ethnicity being singled out.

SOUNDBITE (English), Cecilia MALMSTR&#214;M, Member of the EC in charge of Home Affairs, The concept of profiling is not in itself defined in any legal instrument. But that doesn&rsquo;t mean that we don&rsquo;t have laws on it. The data protection instruments addressed it but they call it prohibition of automated processing. And that means that EU data protections prevents any individual from being subject to a decision which produces legal effects concerning him or her or significantly affects him or her and which is based solely on automated processing of data.

SOUNDBITE (German), Axel VOSS (EPP, DE), I miss a clear concept when it comes to question of the necessary data exchange to combat terror which can be a cause for it. First SWIFT then PNR, then the memorandum of understanding where the access to national data is happening, then we have a framework agreement with the US, then we want to redo our own data protection law, then we want to install a program for one stop security. This is like a fragmented solution.

SOUNDBITE (English), Sophia IN&apos;T VELD (ALDE, NL), I think that this example shows that if the three main Institutions can reach an agreement that we can speak with a single voice on behalf of 500 million citizens and that is a very powerful voice.

SOUNDBITE (German), Jan Philipp ALBRECHT (Greens/EFA, DE), Tomorrow we will accept as a Parliament a common resolution which once again shows our concerns when it comes to the exchange of PNR data. Why do we do that? Because for several years we have uttered criticism which we feel has not been accepted fully in the actual debate. And it is important that this criticism is being heard from the beginning so those resolutions in the Parliament have a chance of being accepted.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish), Juan Fernando L&#211;PEZ AGUILAR (S&amp;D, ES), I am speaking to endorse those colleagues who have supported the usefulness and appropriateness of this negotiating mandate from Council to Commission to set up a framework agreement for the transfer of data and protection of personal data between the EU and the US. And also to express my support to the overall agreement.

But we have a forum here which justified the citizens&rsquo; expectations. The PNR agreement must respect these things, that is clear.

SOUNDBITE (French), Marie-Christine VERGIAT (GUE/NGL, FR), When it comes to the protection of human rights the US are far from being a role model. Citizens don&rsquo;t have the same rights as they have in the US. I think that citizens are often made to jump through administrative hoops and often they are suspected of being terrorists when they are not. What is happening with the guarantees that we have here. When that data is passed on to third countries for prevention purposes. We know very clearly that 80% of this data is already in the US. And the statements that we have just heard are far from reassuring.
