The Environment Committee adopted its position in June on revising the EU’s ecodesign framework for sustainable products. MEPs request several changes to the Commission proposal, including a specific ban on destroying unsold textiles and electrical and electronic equipment. They also want the Commission to prioritise setting minimum sustainability requirements for a number of product groups in upcoming ecodesign measures, such as steel, aluminum, textiles, furniture, tires and chemicals. SOUNDBITE (English), Virginijus SINKEVI&#268;IUS,  Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, By enabling us for the first time to ensure that a wide range of products are designed for circularity and sustainability, this new Ecodesign regulation will speed up our move from the linear take, make, use, dispose economic model to one in which we need less, retain more and contribute to fostering the circular transformation of our economy.

I think this would mean that companies would be on an equal footing in making the shift and we're on the right track to creating a single market for sustainable products.

SOUNDBITE (Swedish), Erik BERGKVIST (S&amp;D, SE), We are setting out conditions for getting rid of bad products so that we create long lasting products so we can see a real life cycle for us. And yes, indeed, it's been very important to look at the whole picture. So we need to look at all the links in the chain, including the social conditions for the people who produce sustainable products. 

SOUNDBITE (Polish), R&#243;&#380;a THUN UND HOHENSTEIN (Renew, PL), We have to do away with these written instructions with all of the instructions delivered with the product. Now these instructions will have to be provided on a digital basis and we will still save a lot of trees. 

SOUNDBITE (Dutch), Sara MATTHIEU (Greens/EFA, BE), Now what we're doing is working towards a real circular economy, and that means that our electrical appliances and our clothes will last longer. They will reusable, recyclable, and they last longer. It means that the pair of jeans have to last a minimum of washes and they've got to be recyclable.

SOUNDBITE (French), Marina MESURE (The Left, FR), This will, for example, ban planned obsolescence, which is absurd and also needs to ban the destruction of unsold goods, textiles or home appliances. All of this aimed at that goods never go to landfill until they have fulfilled their purpose as far as possible. This kind of practice destruction of unsold goods leads to the production of more than 10,000 unnecessary tonnes of CO2 every year.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), Alessandra MORETTI (S&amp;D, IT), Rapporteur, This is a very important proposal for a regulation that will have a strong impact on the entire production system, which we ask to have greater respect for the principle of circularity.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), Alessandra MORETTI (S&amp;D, IT), Rapporteur, Companies therefore have the task of collecting a whole series of information, of entering it through this digital passport. And then, with a simple barcode, the consumer will be able to access the information and consciously choose whether or not to buy a particular product.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), Alessandra MORETTI (S&amp;D, IT), Rapporteur, This ban on destruction is a way to ensure that companies, especially those that produce fast fashion, this sector, in this case the textile sector, which pollutes the most, obviously, but which also wastes more important natural resources, reduce production and produce higher quality products and therefore do not pollute what they are likely to do today with these rules.
