SOUNDBITE (Arabic), Yasser ARAFAT, Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization, "Mr President, Europe has always been a fundamental partner in the drafting of the peace agreement. The European position has always affirmed the essential requirements for creating and establishing peace in our region. The European Parliament has always adopted tough positions and attitudes. We will never forget the positions you took to defend our people during the first years of the Intifada."

SOUNDBITE (Arabic), Yasser ARAFAT, Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization, "We will never forget the positions you took regarding the handling of the occupied territories issue, an issue quite separate from the occupation issue. Your Parliament, as well as the other European authorities, has always placed the emphasis on the essential requirements and conditions. You have always highlighted the need to respect the rights of our people. You have always affirmed the need to apply resolutions affirming international legitimacy. You have always supported the role of the PLO. This is, in fact, what was achieved by the signing of the declaration of principles between Palestine and Israel. While this European attitude reflected a genuine commitment to respect the values of freedom and justice, it demonstrated Europe's clearsightedness, wisdom and firm understanding of the origin of the conflict as well as the courage required to adopt the right position."

SOUNDBITE (Arabic), Yasser ARAFAT, Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization, "For our part, I would like to assure you that we are determined to work tirelessly and make a sustained effort to bring about all the conditions required for the meticulous and sincere implementation of the agreement. We expect the Israeli government to show the same desire to achieve a just peace. Israel's recognition of the PLO and its commitment to withdraw initially from Gaza and Jericho first, and then from all the other occupied territories, shows that Israel is on the right track - the track of respecting the rights of the Palestinian people."

SOUNDBITE (Arabic), Yasser ARAFAT, Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization, "Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, once again, I would like to express my pleasure in being able to address this House. Once again, I reaffirm that we expect a great deal of Europe. And once again, I reaffirm the commitment of my people to work towards consolidating peace, both in Palestine and in the region."
