The International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen 2023 is awarded to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, and to the People of Ukraine in Aachen. Zelensky is committed to the goals of the European Union and pursues European ideals and values, according to the Executive Board's statement. Roberta METSOLA, EP President, take part to a pontical mass and the ceremony in Aachen (Germany). She also does a public address at the Katschhof.

Martin SCHULZ (S&D, DE) was President of the European Parliament from 17 January 2012 to 17 January 2017, and was the first President in the history of the European Parliament to be elected for a second term (1 July 2014-17 January 2017). Prior to joining the European Parliament, he owned a bookshop for twelve years. He joined politics at an early age and became the youngest mayor in North-Rhine Westaphalia at 31, a post he held for 11 years. In 1994, he was elected to the European Parliament and in 2004 he became the Leader of the S&D Group which he remained until he rose to become President of the institution in 2012. After his Presidency, he returned to national politics in Germany. This memoclip shows the first time he took the floor of the European Parliament as an MEP and key moments of his Presidency.

Nadia MURAD and Lamiya AJI BASHAR, survivors of sexual enslavement by Islamic State (IS), receive the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in the hemicycle in Strasbourg. The laureates are commended by the European Parliament for acting as spokespersons for women whose lives have been blighted by sexual violence, and act as advocates for Iraq’s Yazidi community.
