This video shows MEPs, the Council and the Commission debating the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its current and futur implications on energy prices as well as on the availability of fertilizers for our agricultural needs, and how to respond to it. Conclusions of the European Council meeting of 19 March 2026: MEPs debate

MEPs debate on European Council meeting (18 December 2025). At their meeting in Brussels, European leaders reinforced the EU’s solidarity with Ukraine and agreed to provide a €90 billion loan for 2026-2027 based on EU borrowing, while deferring the use of frozen Russian assets for reparations. On the Middle East, they reiterated the EU’s commitment to a just and lasting peace based on a two-state solution. On defence and security, the European Council strongly condemned recent hybrid attacks against EU member states and reviewed progress on boosting EU defence readiness. Leaders also discussed the geoeconomic situation and its implications for the EU’s competitiveness, addressed the 2028-2034 EU long-term budget, and reaffirmed that enlargement remains a key geostrategic priority.

Joint debate - European Council meeting (18 December 2025): MEPs debate (part 1)

MEPs debate on the situation in Venezuela, following the abduction of ex-President Nicolás Maduro and the need to ensure a peaceful democratic transition. Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were extracted from Caracas by US soldiers during a pre-dawn raid on 3 January 2026. They were subsequently flown to New York where they are facing court charges, including for narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine to the US, and possession of machine guns. In parallel, President Donald Trump has also announced that Washington will “run Venezuela”, including its oil industry, for the time being.

Situation in Venezuela: MEPs debate (part 2)

MEPs debate on the preparation of the European Council meeting of 18-19 December 2025. MEPs focus on Europe’s ongoing efforts to secure a just and lasting peace for Ukraine, relations with the US and the EU’s strategic autonomy. At their meeting, EU leaders will also address the situation in the Middle East, the next EU long term budget (Multiannual Financial Framework), the EU’s enlargement strategy as well as ways to manage migration flows, ensure border protection, and strengthen Europe’s competitiveness. Preparation of the European Council meeting of 18-19 December 2025: MEPs debate (part 2)

MEPs debate on the escalation of the war and the humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan. Civil war broke out in Sudan in April 2023 after a brutal power struggle erupted between the Sudanese army and a powerful paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has so far claimed more than 150,000 lives, prompting a famine and claims of genocide in the Darfur region, located in the western part of the country. With the United Arab Emirates having been investigated by a United Nations panel over accusations that it is backing the RSF, there have also been growing calls to end European weapons exports to the Gulf country over fears they might be chanelled to Sudan.

Escalation of the war and the humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan: MEPs debate (continuation after interruption)

MEPs debate on the recent allegations that the Hungarian government has been spying on the EU institutions. On 9 October, several media outlets published allegations that the Hungarian secret services, posing as diplomats at the Hungarian Permanent Representation to the EU, attempted to recruit EU officials as informants in Brussels. The Commission has said it will set up an internal group to investigate the allegations. In a plenary debate on Wednesday afternoon, MEPs will discuss the allegations with Commission and Council representatives.
