The European Climate Law instructs the Commission to propose an EU climate target for 2040 at the latest within six months of the first global stocktake carried out under the Paris Agreement that took place at the COP28 in December 2023. MEPs debate on Parliament’s demands for the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (COP28), taking place in Dubai from 30 November. The Parliament calls for action in view of the COP28, which takes stock of the progress made on implementing the 2015 Paris Agreement. MEPs want global financial contributions to be continued and increased, better efforts to protect, conserve and restore biodiversity and global targets to triple renewable energy and double energy efficiency by 2030. They also call for an end to all direct and indirect fossil fuel subsidies.

Arrested by the morality police on 13 September 2022 for allegedly ignoring Iran’s strict veiling laws, Jina Mahsa Amini died in a Tehran hospital three days later following physical abuse while in custody. Her death sparked protests that spread around the country with at least 500 people killed after the Iranian authorities clamped down on the demonstrations with brutal force. MEPs discuss the situation in Iran and mark Amini’s death that sparked months of mass protests in the county.

MEPs debate the EU’s international commitments and the risks of compromising the EU’s green transition. The European Green Deal was presented by the EC in 2019. Its purpose is to transform the EU into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy, ensuring zero net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050, economic growth decoupled from resource consumption, and with no one and nowhere left behind. MEPs from the ENVI (Environment, Public Health and Food Safety) Committee vote on the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles. The European Parliament calls for binding EU legislation to guarantee that fashion is not produced at the cost of environmental destruction and human lives. Requirements should be set that prevent unsold clothes from being shredded or sent to landfill just because they are no longer in fashion or the warehouse is full. Only textiles that meet a minimum standard of sustainability requirements should be imported into the EU or produced within the EU.
