MEPs debate the recent events in Iran, where authorities have been responding with massive force to nationwide protests that have erupted in recent weeks. Iranian authorities have intensified their violent crackdown on anti-government demonstrations, resulting in a dramatic increase in deaths in recent days. Human rights organisations estimate that hundreds of protestors have been killed. Although the country faces an almost total internet shutdown and severe restrictions on telephone communications, information continues to emerge from the country, including authenticated footage showing protesters being killed and rows of bodies placed in bags outside medical facilities.

This news item shows extracts from the debate on the motion of censure against the President Ursula von der Leyen and the European Commission. Kinga GÁL (PfE, HU), as the first signatory of the motion of censure, takes the floor first, followed by Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič and one round of political group speakers. The vote, by roll call, takes place on Thursday. To be adopted, a motion must secure a two-thirds majority of the votes cast, representing a majority of the component members. MEPs have expressed concerns about the Mercosur agreement, specifically in relation to unfair competition, compliance with European Union standards in Latin American countries and the lack of self-sufficiency. At the same time, a majority has shown support for the agreement in view of the difficult geopolitical situation and the need to find new trade deals and partners.

Motion of censure on the European Commission: extracts from the debate

MEPs debate on the recent allegations that the Hungarian government has been spying on the EU institutions. On 9 October, several media outlets published allegations that the Hungarian secret services, posing as diplomats at the Hungarian Permanent Representation to the EU, attempted to recruit EU officials as informants in Brussels. The Commission has said it will set up an internal group to investigate the allegations. In a plenary debate on Wednesday afternoon, MEPs will discuss the allegations with Commission and Council representatives.

Allegations of espionage by the Hungarian Government within the EU institutions: MEPs debate

MEPs lay out their expectations for the upcoming North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in The Hague on 24-26 June, in a debate with the Commission. At their gathering in The Netherlands, leaders from NATO countries are expected to discuss how to ramp up defence spending in the context of Russia’s continued war of aggression against Ukraine and calls from US President Donald Trump for European countries to invest more and take a greater responsibility for their defence. Conclusions of the European Council meeting of 20 March 2025: MEPs debate (part 1)

The European Union and four Mercosur countries – Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay – reached a political agreement on 6 December 2024 for a ground-breaking partnership agreement. MEPs will review the recently concluded EU-Mercosur free-trade deal, amidst a new geopolitical context of increasing unilateralism, and concerns over the deal’s potential effects on European agriculture. If ratified, the deal would gradually phase out duties on 91% of EU exports to Mercosur and 92% of Mercosur exports to the EU. Parliament must give its consent before the agreement can enter into force.
