The Parliament debate on a new legislation to increase the use of renewable energy in line with the EU’s Green Deal and REPowerEU initiatives. The directive, already informally agreed with the Council, is intended to raise the share of renewables in the EU’s final energy consumption to 42.5% by 2030. Member states are urged to aim for 45%. The new law will also speed up the approval process for new renewable energy power plants, such as solar and wind farms, as well as the adaptation of existing ones.

The Committees on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and the Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) hold a joint public hearing with Ms Iliana IVANOVA, Commissioner-designate for innovation, research, culture, education and youth. Ivanova has been named by the Bulgarian Government to substitute the former Commissioner Maryia Gabriel who left the office on the 15th of may 2023. MEPs discuss and assess the outcome of the 29 - 30 June European Council during the plenary session. During the summit, Heads of State or government focused on the latest developments in Russia, its war of aggression against Ukraine and the EU’s continued support for the country, and on EU migration and asylum policy. MEPs debate on ways on securing the EU’s supply of chips by boosting production and create emergency measures against shortages. The new law aims to increase the EU’s capacity to produce semiconductors from under 10% to 20%, as the pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in global supply chains, with semiconductor shortages causing rising industry costs and consumer prices, slowing down Europe's recovery. The legislation intends to support projects to enhance the EU's supply security by attracting investment and boosting production and it will help small and medium-sized businesses, particularly in chip design, to stimulate innovation.
