All of Europe’s culture in just one click:

such was the ambition of Europeana,   the digital library of the EU.

Two years after its creation,   results are mixed.

And yet, Europeana brings together   thousands of digitised images,

texts, sounds and videos that can all be   accessed through an internet portal.

MEPs have reaffirmed   their interest in the project

and encourage the states   to invest more in it.

What’s important for Europeana is the   wealth of cultural and scientific diversity.

It’s important for member states   to make this available online

through Europeana for the benefit of   EU and other citizens

In 2008, 4.6 million works were online   free of charge thanks to Europeana.

In 2010, internet users should be able   to consult more than 10 million pieces.

It’s to a certain extent a political fine   against the monopoly of Google.

It’s not about the good idea   that Google had.

It’s because of the fight on the   e-book settlement with Google,

that they scan books which is   an infringement of copyright,

especially European rights holders,   which we don’t accept.

Eastern European countries have   contributed the least digitised content.

France, on the other hand, has provided   over 50% of the online library’s content.

MEPs are hoping for   a better balance in the future.

A message passed on to   the Member States.
