Not so long ago, millions of Europeans lived through times when they could not vote or even speak up freely. When their very lives could be in danger simply for being different, for holding different beliefs or for wanting a different life. Democracy is a precious gift passed on to us from previous generations. They aspired towards it and fought for it. Now it is up to us to maintain it, to make it stronger and pass it on to the generations to come. Dabei stoßen allerdings Menschen mit Behinderungen oft auf Hindernisse. Um ihnen die Steine aus dem Weg zu räumen, tut die EU unter anderem diese drei Dinge:

Mehr als 15 Millionen Unionsbürger leben in einem anderen Mitgliedstaat als ihrem Herkunftsland. Sie gehören auch dazu? Dann hätten Sie sicher gerne ein Wörtchen mitzureden bei dem, was in dem Land passiert, in dem Sie leben. Dabei hilft Ihnen die EU auf drei Arten:

Wer bei der Europawahl seine Stimme abgibt, entscheidet darüber, wie sich das Europäische Parlament zusammensetzt, und kann so Entscheidungen beeinflussen. Sie sind Wähler und wollen sich informieren? Dann tut die EU drei Dinge für Sie:

As a general rule, MEPs vote by show of hands and the President of the sitting determines the majorities in each case.

In 1979, a new high tech system was put in place. If the President decides that the result of a vote by show of hands is doubtful, a fresh vote shall be taken using the electronic voting system.

The individual vote cast by each MEP is recorded and published in an annex to the minutes.
