MEPs debate and vote on key EU draft laws to combat climate change by drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to protect jobs and citizens. Parliament is set to adopt its position on eight proposals that are part of the “Fit for 55 in 2030 package”. This is the EU’s plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and have net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (climate neutrality) by 2050, in line with the European Climate Law. SOUNDBITE (English), Peter LIESE (EPP, DE) ETS is the biggest part of the Fit for 55 package. For example, what we will decide in Parliament will reduce emissions 30 times more than CO2 costs until 2030 because it covers the whole economy, electricity industry, maritime. That's new and that's very important and also part of the road transport and the heating. And the key point is that everybody who decarbonise we invest in decarbonisation will be better off at those that want to continue to pollute with their old factories. They will be hit hard and they will feel the pressure to change for the future generation.

SOUNDBITE (English), Peter LIESE (EPP, DE) They will have to pay more for their allowances. The free allowances will step by step go down for those that are not doing an investment. The technology exists in most of the areas where it doesn't exist. We need to help with science and innovation and we shouldn't allow people to run a plant and say, I'm getting the free allowances, so why should I bother with investment in climate? And then when someday it doesn't work anymore, they will send the people home. We want to decarbonise European industry, not to industrialise Europe, but those who do not decarbonise, they have no future.

SOUNDBITE (English), Peter LIESE (EPP, DE) The deal that we have on the table is very clearly focussing on innovation. Those that go for decarbonisation that use the latest technologies will have an advantage. Those that use the old technology, they will be pushed. The whole thing is much more ambitious. So in the past we had €5 as a price. Now we have €80 and the amount of certificates will be reduced over time. So that means the world will change.

SOUNDBITE (English), Peter LIESE (EPP, DE) It's a long standing position of the European Parliament that also dirty ships have to pay and only those that invest in clean technology will be safe in the future. You know, ships are burning the waste of refineries. It's the most dirty fuel and that must change. They need to invest and be more clean. Shipping is a good mode of transport. We need to have it. And that's why the money from the ETS for Maritime shouldn't disappear somewhere. It should be invested in ports and in ships to make them cleaner.
