MEPs are debating the current energy outlook on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the disruption of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. This situation has led to a sharp increase in hydrocarbon prices, highlighting the persistent vulnerabilities within international energy markets. Thus MEPs will quiz Council and Commission representatives on possible measures to enhance the EU’s energy security while maintaining market stability and affordability. The European Council conclusions of 19 March 2026 underscored the urgency of advancing Europe’s energy transition as the primary strategy for enhancing strategic autonomy, resilience, and long-term affordability.

MEPs debate on strengthening EU action on cancer to mark the World Cancer Day (4 February). Established in the 2021 Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, EU action focuses on prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment, and quality of life for cancer patients, survivors and care, through 10 flagship initiatives. Cancer is currently the second leading cause of mortality in the EU, after cardiovascular diseases. In 2024, around 2.7 million people were diagnosed with cancer in the EU and around 1.27 million died. World Cancer Day takes place every year on 4 February. The three-year “United by unique” campaign (2025-2027) aims to raise awareness of the importance of people-centred care.

Following the US President’s Gaza peace proposal, MEPs discuss with the Council and Commission how the EU should join in peace efforts and support the two-state solution. US President Donald Trump announced of his roadmap for peace in Gaza. It includes a plan for the release of the hostages and the demilitarisation of Hamas. EU leaders, including the European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, have welcomed the proposal. Last month, Parliament adopted a resolution on the situation on Gaza, sounding the alarm over the catastrophic humanitarian crisis there and stressing that Israel’s right to defend itself cannot justify indiscriminate military action. The EU’s role in supporting the recent peace efforts for Gaza and a two-state solution: MEPs debate (part 3)

MEPs debate on security guarantees and a just peace for Ukraine, as well as the country’s path towards EU membership. During the debate on EU action to ensure security guarantees for Ukraine, speakers take stock of the outcome of US President Donald Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska during the summer, and the continued Russian bombardment of Ukrainian cities following the summit. MEPs also discuss a report prepared by Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, which encourages the Ukrainian government to keep up the momentum on implementing reforms along the path towards EU membership. Joint debate - EU action to ensure security guarantees and just peace for Ukraine: MEPs debate (part 2)

MEPs, with Commission and Council representatives, debate the EU’s preparations for Europe’s upcoming wildfire and drought season. In the recently launched EU preparedness union strategy, the Commission set out its intention to build on the success of the EU’s rescEU strategic reserve for disaster response, so that it can maintain and possibly scale up its existing capabilities, including aerial firefighting. Drought already affected large parts of Europe this spring, with the situation expected to worsen with rising temperatures. MEPs are likely to ask for details on specific planned EU measures to prevent and prepare for this summer’s wildfires and droughts, as well as on the status of EU climate resilience and preparedness policies

Political group speakers quiz the Commission on its stance on respect for European values in Hungary in light of the government’s ban of the Budapest Pride march. During the debate, MEPs are set to demand that the Commission apply for interim measures as part of the ongoing trial, so that the Court of Justice of the EU can order the suspension of the legislation. They are also expected to point to the recent opinion of the EU Court of Justice’s Advocate General, who considers Hungary’s Child Protection Act incompatible with EU law.

Freedom of assembly in Hungary and the need for the Commission to act: MEPs debate (part 1)

MEPs, together with Commission and Council representatives, debate the preparations for the first EU-UK summit on British soil since Brexit. EU and UK leaders will meet in London on 19 May for the first institutional bilateral gathering in Britain since the UK left the EU in 2020. Among other topics, they will discuss defence cooperation, opportunities for young people, and trade issues – the latter in the wake of the new US tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on trade partners. In particular, this includes a potential EU-UK security pact that could see the UK participate in the EU’s joint arms procurement scheme.
