A catch documentation programme for bluefin tuna: extracts from the debate

SOUNDBITE (Spanish), Ra&#252;l ROMEVA i RUEDA (Greens/EFA, ES), rapporteur, The fishing season was closed for tuna vessels because the EU quota was been outreached the over capacity... The over exploitation situation is very well known, the tuna population has been reduced to less than 50%... we have to look at the issue whether the capture is legal or not, it is very difficult to check monitors of the situation, our efforts for this previous 20 years were at least insufficient : we need to take bold decisions.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish), Juan Carlos MARTIN FRAGUEIRO, EU Council Presidency, All lots of bluefin tuna have to have documentation related to the catch , the tape with flag states, regardless of every aspect of the catch, the net, transport and trade. So all activities in relation with blue fin tunas are recorded to avoid that unscrupulous can exploit and put in danger our effort to preserve bluefin tuna.

SOUNDBITE (English), Mar&#237;a DAMAN&#193;KI, EU Commissioner for Fisheries, I am glad that the report supports all aspects linked to the practical implementations of the catch documentation for the bluefin tuna company products from catch to the trade channel... This catch documentation will ensure the control of traceability of bluefin tuna fishery products, landed, farmed, domestically trade, imported or exported from the European Union.
