MEPs, with Commission and Council representatives, debate the EU’s preparations for Europe’s upcoming wildfire and drought season. In the recently launched EU preparedness union strategy, the Commission set out its intention to build on the success of the EU’s rescEU strategic reserve for disaster response, so that it can maintain and possibly scale up its existing capabilities, including aerial firefighting. Drought already affected large parts of Europe this spring, with the situation expected to worsen with rising temperatures. MEPs are likely to ask for details on specific planned EU measures to prevent and prepare for this summer’s wildfires and droughts, as well as on the status of EU climate resilience and preparedness policies

Parliament discuss the need for member states and media service providers to make sure they apply in full the rules designed to protect journalists and press freedom. With the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) due to enter into application on 8 August 2025, Parliament wants to highlight the importance of EU countries working to protect media sources and confidential communications. This means not detaining or sanctioning journalists, and not conducting unwarranted office searches or installing surveillance software. Members states will need to guarantee the editorial independence of public service media operators, and publish all media ownership details on national databases, among other initiatives to ensure transparency.

In light of the recent widespread blackouts that affected Spain, Portugal, and southern France, MEPs debate on assessing the resilience of the EU’s energy infrastructure and the critical need to strengthen cross-border interconnections within the internal energy market with Adam SZŁAPKA, Polish Minister for European Affairs, and Dan JØRGENSEN, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing. MEPs raised concerns about the vulnerability of national power grids to extreme weather events, technical failures, emphasizing that the recent outages serve as a wake-up call for accelerating investment in a more integrated and robust European electricity network. Discussions also touched on the role of renewable energy, energy storage, and smart grid technologies in enhancing energy security and meeting the EU’s climate goals.
