SOUNDBITE (English), Roberta METSOLA, EP President, Today, in my first full day as president of this House, I am really happy to inaugurate the renovated audiovisual facilities of the European Parliament. Those of you who have been working here for some time, I think can appreciate together with me and all my colleagues the complete and in-depth the restructuring of the area surrounding the hemicycle, providing state of the art services and the facilities both to members of this house and also to journalists and media representatives. As you can also see, this renovation has brought about new broadcast and multimedia areas, improved the technical infrastructures, new studios that I've just been shown. They are really wonderful and stand up positions for the media. This is the hub of lively debates, as we saw today, exchange of views and information sharing, and the very same principles that shape our unique institution as a house of discussion, openness and transparency.

You are a core component of our democratic societies, the fourth pillar of democracy, and we are here to support your work, which cannot and should never be taken for granted. I am proud that this house is an ardent defender of media freedom and we will continue to be so today on behalf of this parliament. I reaffirm our commitment to supporting media freedom and pluralism and to take Europe beyond the walls of this impressive new audiovisual infrastructure, bringing it closer to its citizens.
