SOUNDBITE (English), Roberta METSOLA, President of the European Parliament, This is a sad day for Europe and a dark day for democracy, international law and peace. Putin has once again unleashed an invasion in Ukraine. And in Europe, the nation, what we stand for is unity and solidarity. Because this brutal aggression is aimed at trying to destroy and divide Europe, it is based on lies, disinformation and deception without any reality based justification.

SOUNDBITE (English), Roberta METSOLA, President of the European Parliament, Our thoughts and actions are with the people of Ukraine who are today who standing with utmost courage and bravery the most aggressive of attacks. And I truly and very strongly deplore the pointless loss of life. 

SOUNDBITE (English), Roberta METSOLA, President of the European Parliament, To be clear, we can be under no longer any illusion that this attack goes right to the very heart of a European model of democratic society. And this is exactly what Putin wants. He wants to divide because he's fear. He's fearful of this kind of model, which he wants to undo. What is Putin afraid of? He's afraid of openness, accountability and freedom.

Our Europe is based on freedoms, our of Europe is based on values and our Europe is based on laws. That is our strength. That is what keeps us united. And that was what we will continue to work for because no aggression will go unobserved and unattached.
