SOUNDBITE (Italian) David SASSOLI, EP President, Today is the anniversary of the Liberation of Italy from Nazi-Fascism. On April 25 1945, the National Liberation Committee of Upper Italy proclaimed the uprising in all the territories occupied by the Nazi-fascists.

SOUNDBITE (Italian) David SASSOLI, EP President, Surrender or perish, was the watchword given by the partisan commands. That day marks the fall of fascism, the expulsion of the Nazis from Italy. The history of the Republic begins there. The referendum, then sanctioned the end of the monarchy. And soon afterwards our Constitution will be born, based on those values, the values of freedom, which anti-fascism had consecrated.

SOUNDBITE (Italian) David SASSOLI, EP President, We must never forget those men and women who made the choice to fight and to rebel against war even simply disobeying dictatorship. Many have done their part. Many of them fell, shouting &ldquo;Long live freedom&rdquo;, &ldquo;Long live Italy&rdquo;.

And in their name , Europe has found the strength to unite to become the place of peace, and solidarity among nations.
