SOUNDBITE (Italian), Antonio TAJANI, EP President, I thank you for your your kind welcome to the representatives of the European peoples on the occasion of the 60th anniversary if the signature of the Rome Treaty. The citizens are the real protagonists of this great adventure of European democracy. The strength and the legitimacy of our actions derive from their participation. That is why I am very worried about the sense of alienation that is growing inside a big part of the public opinion. If we want to relaunch our Union, we need first of all to fill the gap between the Institutions and the citizens. And this is the main aim of my mandate. The EP and the national parliaments have to be on the front line to achieve this. In this spirit, together with the EP political groups chairs, the EP Vice-Presidents and the EP Questors, we have celebrated this anniversary in Norcia. In this way we want to show that Europe is not forgetting, and that it is capable to offer concrete solidarity to those who have suffered deep wounds. Mr President we had an amazing welcome, I am telling you, there were dozens of people waiting for our buses on the side of the roads for more than half an hour, they welcomed us with flags and applauses. My colleague Gonzalez Pons was impressed of seeing the people applauding politicians. Evidently, when politicians get closer to the citizens, they understand that we really want to solve their problems. This has been a good experience for us all and I wanted to share with you this positive moment. Applause.
