Simone Veil var en av grundarna till dagens EU och den första talmannen i det direktvalda Europaparlamentet. Hon kämpade hårt för ett mer enat Europa och ett starkare skydd för mänskliga rättigheter. Som kvinnorättskämpe var hon en av nyckelpersonerna i kampen för att legalisera abort i Frankrike och hon blev ett föredöme för kvinnor i ledande positioner i samhället. Och som förintelseöverlevare förstod hon mycket väl hur viktigt det var att ena Europa. Simone Veil kan sägas förkroppsliga EU:s valspråk: Förenade i mångfalden. Hennes arbete för rättvisa och mänskliga rättigheter är än idag en inspiration för oss alla.
