Yulia NAVALNAYA and Leonid VOLKOV, Chief of Staff for Alexey Navalny and Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Foundation are invited to the European Parliament, in Brussels. Russian opposition politician and anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny will be awarded the 2021 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. The Committees on Foreign Affairs and Development (AFET) and the Subcommittee on Human Rights hold a joint exchange of views with the representatives of the 2021 Sakharov Prize laureate Mr Alexei Navalny - his daughter Daria Navalnaya and his adviser Leonid Volkov. Mr Navalny is currently incarcerated in a high-security penal colony in Russia and therefore cannot be present in person.

Alexei Navalny, nominated for the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought by the EPP and Renew Europe for his courage in fighting for freedom, democracy and human rights, is a Russian opposition politician, anti-corruption activist and major political opponent of the country's president Vladimir Putin. In August 2020, while on a trip to Siberia, he was poisoned. He spent months recovering in Berlin, but returned to Moscow in January 2021 where he was arrested. In February he was sentenced to 2½ years in prison. The footage are ©AFP.
