The Digital Single Market strategy aims to open up digital opportunities for people and business and enhance Europe's position as a world leader in the digital economy. In this framework, a new legislative package for the modernisation of the EU copyright rules is presented by the Commission in September 2016.

A Digital Single Market (DSM) is one in which the free movement of persons, services and capital is ensured and where the individuals and businesses can seamlessly access and exercise online activities under conditions of fair competition, and a high level of consumer and personal data protection, irrespective of their nationality or place of residence. 
The European Commission has identified the completion of the Digital Single Market (DSM) as one of its 10 political priorities. 
Among its directives, a new directive on copyright in the digital single market. The purpose is to adapt EU copyright legislation to the digital environment, which is quickly changing the way copyright-protected works and content are created, produced, distributed and exploited in the European Union.

Digital single market - Copyright directive - 8th parliamentary term

The proposed "Directive on copyright in the Digital Single Market" seeks to ensure that creatives and news publishers and journalists benefit from the online world and the internet as they do from the offline world.

n March 2019 MEPs adopted by 348 votes in favour, 274 against and 36 abstentions a new directive on Copyright. This marks the end of the legislative process for the European Parliament that began in 2016. The directive aims to ensure that the longstanding rights and obligations of copyright law also apply to the internet. YouTube, Facebook and Google News are some of the internet household names that will be most directly affected by this legislation. The directive also strives to ensure that the internet remains a space for freedom of expression.

Creatives and news publishers will be empowered to negotiate with internet giants thanks to new copyright rules which also contain safeguards on freedom of expression.

EU-parlamentet har enats om målvärden för att minska koldioxidutsläppen från vägtransporter samt antagit upphovsrättsregler för att se till att rättigheter och skyldigheter som är kopplade till immateriella rättigheter nu även gäller för onlinevärlden. Parlamentsledamöterna röstade även om nya regler för att ge arbetstagare ett bättre skydd mot cancerframkallande kemikalier, om att förbjuda plastartiklar för engångsbruk samt om att slopa sommar- och vintertiden.

Från koldioxid till upphovsrätt: 5 punkter från Strasbourg

Parlamentet har godkänt nya upphovsrättsregler för den digitala tidsåldern. Reglerna kommer att se till att rättigheter och skyldigheter rörande immaterialrätt nu även gäller för onlinevärlden. Mindre webbplatser och privatpersoner kommer att undantas helt eller delvis från reglerna, för att på så sätt skydda rätten till yttrandefrihet på internet.
