European Commissioner Corina CRETU meets with Petri SARVAMAA

Prime Minister of Finland Petteri Orpo speaks to MEPs to outline his vision on Europe’s challenges and future. Before the debate, EP President Roberta Metsola holds a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Orpo, followed by a press point at 10.20 (still to be confirmed). MEPs discuss the December European Council, the 1 February Special summit and assess the situation in Hungary with the European Council's and Commission's presidents. During their meeting on 14 - 15 December, heads of state or government agreed, among other things, to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova and grant candidate status to Georgia. The European Court of Auditors (ECA) is an institution of the European Union (EU) and the external auditor of the EU’s finances. In this capacity, it acts as the independent guardian of the financial interests of all EU citizens, notably by helping to improve the EU’s financial management. Its annual report on the implementation of the EU budget presents the statement of assurance as to whether the EU’s accounts are reliable and whether the EU budget has been used in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations. Tony Murphy, President of the European Court of Auditors, attends the hemicycle in order to discuss the Court of Auditors' annual report 2022 with MEPs.

MEPs debate on the establisment of the Ukraine Facility, a €50 billion package to support Ukraine's recovery, reconstruction and modernisation from 2024 to 2027. MEPs have improved the proposal by strengthening transparency and democratic accountability. One of the key demands is that Russian assets should be used to fund Ukraine’s reconstruction. MEPs debate on a law that would contribute to the long-term recovery of damaged nature across the EU’s land and sea areas and to achieve EU climate and biodiversity objectives. As there was no majority in the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety in favour of the EU nature restoration law as amended, the Committee has tabled to plenary the proposal to reject the Commission’s proposal. MEPs debate about the deliberate and systematic efforts of the Hungarian Government to undermine the founding values of the EU enshrined in Article 2 TEU, after the state of rule of law and fundamental rights have worsened in the country.
