Statement by Enrique BARON CRESPO on the desecration of the Jewish cemetery in Carpentras

SOUNDBITE (Spanish), Enrique BARON CRESPO, EP President, I made the following statement as president of the European Parliament. After the desecration of the Jewish cemetery in Carpentraslast week, I issued the following press communique. I cannot find words strong enough to describe this act of barbarism, which every human being who wants to be regarded as human must hold against his conscience. We must all fight against this plague, this resurgence of the plague of anti-Semitism. 

SOUNDBITE (Spanish), Enrique BARON CRESPO, EP President, The European Parliament is conscious of the seriousness of the subject and will continue to use all the resources available to it in order to make sure that the community is an area of tolerance and mutual respect. All people who encourage such acts by their statements will meet the opposition of the European Parliament

SOUNDBITE (Spanish), Enrique BARON CRESPO, EP President, Our committee investigating racism and xenophobia will be proposing concrete measures to the 12 member states governments so that the Council in the line with the statement that it made with the commission in 1986. I can say that that statement can have binding effect. As an expression of goodwill and solidarity, I suggest that we should now stand in silence for one minute.
