The Digital Single Market strategy aims to open up digital opportunities for people and business and enhance Europe's position as a world leader in the digital economy. In this framework, a new legislative package for the modernisation of the EU copyright rules is presented by the Commission in September 2016.

A Digital Single Market (DSM) is one in which the free movement of persons, services and capital is ensured and where the individuals and businesses can seamlessly access and exercise online activities under conditions of fair competition, and a high level of consumer and personal data protection, irrespective of their nationality or place of residence. 
The European Commission has identified the completion of the Digital Single Market (DSM) as one of its 10 political priorities. 
Among its directives, a new directive on copyright in the digital single market. The purpose is to adapt EU copyright legislation to the digital environment, which is quickly changing the way copyright-protected works and content are created, produced, distributed and exploited in the European Union.

The proposed "Directive on copyright in the Digital Single Market" seeks to ensure that creatives and news publishers and journalists benefit from the online world and the internet as they do from the offline world.

n March 2019 MEPs adopted by 348 votes in favour, 274 against and 36 abstentions a new directive on Copyright. This marks the end of the legislative process for the European Parliament that began in 2016. The directive aims to ensure that the longstanding rights and obligations of copyright law also apply to the internet. YouTube, Facebook and Google News are some of the internet household names that will be most directly affected by this legislation. The directive also strives to ensure that the internet remains a space for freedom of expression.

Parlament se je dogovoril o ciljih znižanja emisij CO2 v cestnem prometu ter sprejel pravila o avtorskih pravicah, da bi zdaj pravice intelektualne lastnine in odgovornosti zanjo veljale tudi na spletu. Poslanci so glasovali tudi o novih pravilih za boljšo zaščito delavcev pred rakotvornimi kemikalijami, prepovedi plastike za enkratno uporabo in opustitvi premikanja ure dvakrat letno.

Parlament je potrdil nova pravila o avtorskih pravicah za digitalno dobo, na podlagi katerih bodo pravice intelektualne lastnine in odgovornosti zanjo odslej veljale tudi na spletu. Manjše spletne strani in posamezniki bodo deloma ali v celoti izvzeti, s čimer se ohranja svoboda izražanja na spletu.
