EU’s response to the repeated killing of humanitarian aid workers, journalists and civilians by the Israel Defence Forces in the Gaza Strip: MEPs debate (part 2)

After the deal reached between the Parliament and the Council, MEPs debate on Tuesday and vote on Wednesday on the first EU rules on combating violence against women and domestic violence. The new directive will prohibit forced marriage and female genital mutilation and have specific rules on cybercrimes, such as cyber-flashing and cyber-stalking. Victims will have improved access to justice and to healthcare, including sexual and reproductive services, while the legislation will include provisions to prevent rape. MEPs debate.

MEPs debate on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25). Plenary assesses the situation across the EU with Commission representatives. Parliament has repeatedly raised the issue of gender-based violence and is currently in negotiations with member states on draft EU legislation to tackle violence against women and domestic violence.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women: MEPs debate (part 1)

Following Hamas’ deadly attack against Israel on 7 October 2023, which claimed the lives of around 1,200 people and resulted in more than 200 people being taken hostage, Israel declared war against the terrorist group. It began striking the Gaza Strip from the air, later sending ground forces into the sealed-off coastal enclave. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, more than 11,000 Palestinians, including a large number of civilians, have so far been killed. MEPs take stock of the latest developments, and discuss the regional and global implications of the renewed hostilities as well as the prospects for peace and security in the Middle East.

Key debate - Humanitarian situation in Gaza: MEPs debate (part 2)

The Parliament debates on the current situation in Afghanistan, whereas the human rights situation continues to deteriorate alarmingly, with high levels of human rights violations including torture and killings and attacks against minority groups. Moreover, Afghanistan continues to be the most repressive country in the world for women and girls after the Taliban takeover.
