The Digital Single Market strategy aims to open up digital opportunities for people and business and enhance Europe's position as a world leader in the digital economy. In this framework, a new legislative package for the modernisation of the EU copyright rules is presented by the Commission in September 2016.

A Digital Single Market (DSM) is one in which the free movement of persons, services and capital is ensured and where the individuals and businesses can seamlessly access and exercise online activities under conditions of fair competition, and a high level of consumer and personal data protection, irrespective of their nationality or place of residence. 
The European Commission has identified the completion of the Digital Single Market (DSM) as one of its 10 political priorities. 
Among its directives, a new directive on copyright in the digital single market. The purpose is to adapt EU copyright legislation to the digital environment, which is quickly changing the way copyright-protected works and content are created, produced, distributed and exploited in the European Union.

The proposed "Directive on copyright in the Digital Single Market" seeks to ensure that creatives and news publishers and journalists benefit from the online world and the internet as they do from the offline world.

n March 2019 MEPs adopted by 348 votes in favour, 274 against and 36 abstentions a new directive on Copyright. This marks the end of the legislative process for the European Parliament that began in 2016. The directive aims to ensure that the longstanding rights and obligations of copyright law also apply to the internet. YouTube, Facebook and Google News are some of the internet household names that will be most directly affected by this legislation. The directive also strives to ensure that the internet remains a space for freedom of expression.

Creatives and news publishers will be empowered to negotiate with internet giants thanks to new copyright rules which also contain safeguards on freedom of expression.

Parlament sa dohodol na cieľoch zníženia emisií CO2 v cestnej doprave a schválil pravidlá týkajúce sa autorských práv tak, aby sa práva a povinnosti súvisiace s duševným vlastníctvom zhodovali v reálnom aj online prostredí. Poslanci tiež hlasovali o nových pravidlách na ochranu pracovníkov pred karcinogénnymi chemikáliami, o zákaze jednorazových plastov a o zrušení striedania letného a zimného času.

Parlament podporil nové pravidlá týkajúce sa autorských práv v digitálnej dobe. Takto chce zabezpečiť, aby práva a zodpovednosť v oblasti duševného vlastníctva platili aj na internete. Menšie platformy a jednotlivci dostali čiastočnú alebo úplnú výnimku, vďaka čomu sa bude chrániť sloboda prejavu v online prostredí.
