Opening remarks by Antonio TAJANI, EP President: International Girls in ICT Day – 27 April 2017 and on the waiver of immunity of Marine LE PEN and Marie-Christine BOUTONNET

SOUNDBITE (Italian), Antonio TAJANI, EP President, <a></a>Tomorrow, we celebrate the International Day dedicated to girls in information and communication technologies (ICT). This initiative is aimed at encouraging girls and young women to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, a sector which is constantly expanding. In Europe, just 29 women out of every 1000 graduates have a degree in science, compared with 95 male graduates over 1000. And, unfortunately, only 4 of them actually found a job in this area. Globally, women account for only 24% of jobs in science and technology, and tend to be concentrated in administrative functions. The gender gap then tends to increase by climbing the hierarchical scale.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), Antonio TAJANI, EP President, We must do our part in meeting the United Nations Sustainability Goals, the MDG 5 (Millennium Development Goals) , is part of improving the gender divide situation including access to technology and science.That is why we need to work to make our education systems inclusive and efficient and encourage governments and companies to remove gender barriers and to make the most of their female workers.
