Comerțul transatlantic cu sclavi este un capitol sumbru și dureros al istoriei umane, care a durat peste patru sute de ani și a afectat peste cincisprezece milioane de persoane. În ciuda abolirii sclaviei, ideologiile rasiste continuă să existe și să modeleze atitudini și comportamente discriminatorii și în zilele noastre. Inițiative precum Ziua Internațională a Organizației Națiunilor Unite pentru Comemorarea Sclaviei și a Comerțului Transatlantic cu Sclavi și Săptămâna de combatere a rasismului și de promovare a diversității organizată de Uniunea Europeană urmăresc să sensibilizeze publicul, să promoveze egalitatea și să creeze o societate mai incluzivă.

În 2005, în ziua în care s-au împlinit 60 de ani de la eliberarea lagărului de la Auschwitz, o rezoluție a Organizației Națiunilor Unite a desemnat ziua de 27 ianuarie drept Ziua Internațională de Comemorare a Victimelor Holocaustului. Termenul „Holocaust” provine din limba greacă și înseamnă „sacrificiu prin foc”. Este folosit pentru a descrie persecuția și ulterior uciderea în masă a șase milioane de evrei în Europa de către regimul nazist și colaboratorii săi. Între anii 1933 și 1945, regimul nazist și aliații săi au vizat și alte grupuri, inclusiv romii, persoanele cu dizabilități, slavii, precum și persoanele gay și membrii anumitor grupuri religioase și politice.
