Belgium holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1 January to 30 June 2024. Belgium has announced that it will be working to strengthen the European Union and make progress in several areas, such as climate change, economic growth and social cohesion; whilst acting as a neutral mediator to lead the legislative work and seek compromises among the EU Member States. Parlamentul European a decernat Premiul Saharov 2023 pentru libertatea de gândire Jinei Mahsa Amini și mișcării „Femeie, Viață, Libertate” din Iran, în cadrul unei ceremonii speciale organizate la Strasbourg.      Jinei Mahsa Amini, o femeie iraniană de etnie kurdă, a murit în 2022 ca victimă a brutalității așa-numitei „poliții morale”. Motivul invocat a fost ignorarea legilor stricte privind purtarea vălului islamic. Moartea ei a provocat proteste în Iran și în întreaga lume.           Membrii Parlamentului European continuă să fie alături de femeile iraniene în lupta lor pentru libertate și egalitate.

Parlamentul European a acordat Premiul Saharov 2023 Jinei Mahsa Amini și mișcării de protest „Femeie, Viață, Libertate” din Iran. Parlamentul stă alături de femeile iraniene care continuă să lupte pentru drepturile lor, pentru egalitate și pentru democrație. Amini a fost o tânără de 22 de ani de naționalitate kurdă din Iran. A fost arestată de „poliția morală” a Iranului pentru presupusa ignorare a legilor iraniene stricte privind purtarea vălului. A murit după trei zile, în urma violenței fizice suferite cât timp s-a aflat în custodie. În septembrie 2022, când s-a aflat despre moartea ei, în toată țara au izbucnit demonstrații spontane, sub deviza Femeie, Viață, Libertate. Oameni din întreaga lume au participat la marșuri pentru solidaritate.

MEPs debate on their position on rules to protect journalists, activists, academics, artists and researchers against legal actions aimed at silencing them. The draft directive provides minimum standards of protection from lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP) in the EU through early dismissal of these cases, obliging the claimant to cover the costs of proceedings and not recognising third country judgements. The rules should apply in cross-border cases when the claimant and defendant are not based in the same country as the court or when the case is relevant to more than one member state and the disputed work can be accessed electronically. MEPs are also set to call on member states to ensure that SLAPP victims get legal, financial and psychological assistance.
