In the European Union, democracy may seem obvious to us today. But this has not always been the case. Not so long ago, millions of Europeans lived through times when they could not vote or even speak up freely. When their very lives could be in danger simply for being different, for holding different beliefs or for wanting a different life. Democracy is a precious gift passed on to us from previous generations. They aspired towards it and fought for it. Now it is up to us to maintain it, to make it stronger and pass it on to the generations to come. Deepfakes are hyper-realistic videos created through artificial intelligence techniques. They present many possibilities, but also dangers. A wide range of malicious uses have been identified, including fraud, extortion and political disinformation. The impacts of such misuse can be financial, psychological and reputational. While the technology itself is legal, some malicious uses are not, and a combination of legal and technical measures may be mobilised to limit their production and dissemination.

The video game ecosystem has become a leading cultural and creative industry all over the world. It has an estimated European market size of EUR 23.3 billion in 2021, and it encompasses more than 4 900 game studios and 200 game publishers, with great potential for growth, innovation, creativity and triggering positive change for the whole sector.

Video games have proven to be a powerful cross-sectoral medium, successfully inspiring and drawing on many other creative and cultural industries, such as films and books. According to the Interactive Software Federation of Europe, half of all Europeans consider themselves to be video game players, of whom almost half are women, and the average age of a video game player in Europe is 31.3 years. Over 70 % of young people aged 6-24 in the EU play video games, although the majority of players are over 18.

On January 2023,&nbsp;Parliament called for gamers to be better protected from addiction and other manipulative practices, while emphasising the potential of this innovative sector.

Esports and video games

In 2017, some of the major challenges faced by the European Union, and notably by the European Parliament, were the fight against terrorism, the negotiations on the arrangements for the UK's withdrawal from the EU - the Brexit, or even the response to the migration and the refugee crisis.

Among the significant achievements, we can highlight the end of roaming charges and the provisional entry into force of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement - the CETA.

 
So what does the future hold for 2018?&nbsp; The presentation of the White Paper by the European Commission on March 2017, has set out possible paths for the future of Europe. The debate will end with the European Parliament elections in 2019.

Strasbourg's Plenary session through the lens - Week 4

On 1 January 2025, Romania and Bulgaria entered the Schengen area. The Schengen Area is an area comprising 29 European countries that have officially abolished all passport and all other types of border control at their mutual borders. Of the 27 EU member states, 25 participate in the Schengen Area. Cyprus and Ireland do not at this time. The four European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, have signed agreements in association with the Schengen Agreement. Aerial drone shots provide general overviews of the harbour’s scale and activity. From street-level views captured from a car, we see the trucks transporting goods into the port. The footage also highlights modern wind turbines. Shipping remains one of the most important means of trade for the Member States of the EU. Nowadays, ships carry more than half the value of goods imports to the EU and over 40 percent of goods exports from the EU. In 2021, about 1.1 trillion euros worth of goods were imported to the EU, and about 956 billion euros worth of cargo exported from the EU by sea.

This infoclip contains footage to illustrate the EU-MERCOSUR Trade relations. In particular, it contains shots showing capital cities of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay as well as European products (mainly food and drinks) in supermarkets. The European Union and four Mercosur countries – Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay – reached a political agreement on 6 December 2024 for a ground-breaking partnership agreement. The EU is Mercosur's number one trade and investment partner. EU exports to Mercosur were €56 billion in goods in 2023 and €28 billion in services in 2022.

44% of EU households have a pet animal. Trade in dogs and cats has grown considerably in recent years, with an annual value of EUR 1.3 billion. However, animal welfare standards for professional breeding, keeping and selling dogs and cats very much diverge between Member States. There is extensive evidence of sub-standard practices and abuse and illegal trade in dogs and cats has soared, with a growing online market accounting for 60% of EU sales. EU level legislation with the aim of regulating the trade while ensuring a high level of animal welfare has been proposed. This infoclip shows employees at the Malta Society for the Protection and Care of Animals, MSPCA, and clandestine iphone footage taken during rescue operations from illegal backyard breeding. The MSPCA rescues, shelters, rehabilitate, give medical care, educate and rehome animals in need. Animals are rescued from neglect, abuse and backyard breeding and helped to find a new home.

The European Parliament commemorates Holocaust Remembrance Day to honor the victims and reflect on the lessons of the past. Established in 1995, this annual event coincides with the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau on 27 January 1945. This year, the Parliament highlights the story of Hungarian-born cellist Pál Hermann, who was murdered in the Holocaust. His Gagliano cello, saved from the Nazis and rediscovered decades later, symbolizes resilience and the enduring power of art. The ceremony includes a speech by Hermann’s daughter, Corrie Hermann, and a performance of his music by cellist Sam Lucas. Through remembrance and education, the European Parliament reaffirms its commitment to fighting anti-Semitism, promoting tolerance, and ensuring such atrocities are never repeated.

This infoclip displays a team listening to a practical and theorical training in a warehouse in Ireland. In a classroom filled with computers, students are learning mettallurgic moves thanks to virtual reality. They also learn robotics, and follow technical explanations by a professor displaying his lesson on screens. At the end of the infoclip, the cameras follows an auditorium lecture in the University of Luxembourg.

This infoclip illustrates key areas of the trade between the United States of America and the European Union. The footage features shots of European brands in New York, specifically showcasing European cars, food, wine, and fashion labels. This infoclip also highlights the steel industry, showing workers in a steel production workshop and the use of steel in train construction. Additionally, the clip includes footage of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) being delivered to Europe at the Gate (Gas Access to Europe) terminal in the port of Rotterdam. The European Union and the United States have the largest bilateral trade and investment relationship and the most integrated economic relationship in the world. Together, they represent almost 30% of global trade in goods and services and 43% of global GDP. In 2023, transatlantic trade in goods and services exceeded €1.5 trillion.
