The video game ecosystem has become a leading cultural and creative industry all over the world. It has an estimated European market size of EUR 23.3 billion in 2021, and it encompasses more than 4 900 game studios and 200 game publishers, with great potential for growth, innovation, creativity and triggering positive change for the whole sector.

Video games have proven to be a powerful cross-sectoral medium, successfully inspiring and drawing on many other creative and cultural industries, such as films and books. According to the Interactive Software Federation of Europe, half of all Europeans consider themselves to be video game players, of whom almost half are women, and the average age of a video game player in Europe is 31.3 years. Over 70 % of young people aged 6-24 in the EU play video games, although the majority of players are over 18.

On January 2023,&nbsp;Parliament called for gamers to be better protected from addiction and other manipulative practices, while emphasising the potential of this innovative sector.

This collection of infoclips presents selected key topics ahead of the 2025 State of the European Union address. The material covers the economy and the EU’s long-term budget, European defence and security, support to Ukraine, protection of the environment and biodiversity, democracy and rule of law, and the Union’s external relations. The State of the Union is delivered annually by the President of the European Commission to the European Parliament. In 2025, Ursula von der Leyen will give her first State of the Union speech of her second mandate, outlining priorities and initiatives for the year ahead while reflecting on progress achieved so far. The address is followed by a debate in Parliament, allowing Members to respond and exchange views. Together, the speech and debate help set the political direction of the European Union for the coming months.

This infoclip shows young children watching videos and playing games on mobile devices and computers, parents searching on the internet for parental control tools and creating children’s friendly profiles on viewing platforms and gaming platforms, parents checking the content their children are accessing and setting up restrictions such as screen time restrictions on devices. It is also illustrating parents attending a training on online protection of children (provided by Child focus organisation). A growing number of children are navigating digital environments not designed for them. There is therefore a discussion on whether to enhance the protection of minors online. The Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee (IMCO) has adopted an own-initiative report with recommendations for safer digital environments for minors. During the November II plenary session, Parliament is due to debate and vote on the report.

In October 2025, the European Parliament has voted to ban the use of some words to describe the variants of products which are not meat-based. MEPs decided to introduce a new definition of meat as “edible parts of animals” and specify that names such as steak, escalope, sausage or burger must be reserved exclusively for products containing meat and must exclude cell-cultured products.
