Deepfakes (AI-manipulated media) are flooding the internet and altering reality. They influence the way certain events or statements are perceived and generate tensions by artificially creating misconceptions. Criminal offences have already been committed using this technique. Since the web operates worldwide, this creates challenges for local, national and supranational legal systems. Therefore, action is also required at the EU level.
