Vote on the Commission decision to activate Article 7 paragraph 1 TEU as regards the situation in Poland: statement by Claude MORAES (S&D,UK), rapporteur and illustrative shots of the vote

SOUNDBITE (English), Claude MORAES (S&amp;D, UK), Rapporteur, <p>Yesterday the LIBE Committee of the European Parliament gave its vote, played its part in a European Commission&rsquo;s decision to invoke Article 7 of the European Treaties. Article 7 is in relation to the rule of law and fundamental rights, in relation to a country which it believes may have breached the Treaties in these areas. So the EP by voting yesterday was voting positively to endorse the EC&rsquo;s decision in this process, secondly to go forward to the Plenary of the EP for a full debate, and a vote on a resolution, but also to indicate that the EP has to play its role, and our role specifically is to grant consent at the end of this process in relation to what the EC has initiated in December last year which was the very important Article 7 process which it triggered late in 2017. So the EP now through this vote plays its role.</p>
