Elk jaar, op 15 maart, is het Werelddag van de Rechten van de Consument. Op deze dag vergroten we het bewustzijn over consumentenrechten en over hoe deze in de hele wereld worden beschermd. Het Europees Parlement speelt een cruciale rol bij de bescherming van de rechten van alle consumenten in de Europese Unie. De EU telt meer dan 450 miljoen consumenten. Eerlijke behandeling, transparantie en veilige producten en diensten zijn dan ook essentieel. Laten we ontdekken hoe je rechten als consument in de EU worden beschermd.

Werelddag van de Rechten van de Consument

De Europese Unie stelt momenteel de eerste wet over artificiële intelligentie ter wereld op. Het Parlement wil innovatie op dit gebied bevorderen en tegelijkertijd de mensenrechten en fundamentele vrijheden beschermen. Op grond van de nieuwe wet komt er een verbod op AI-systemen met een onaanvaardbaar risico voor de menselijke veiligheid en krijgen andere AI-systemen regels opgelegd.

De Europese Commissie heeft aangekondigd dat zij wetgeving zal voorstellen rond het recht op reparatie. Het doel is de kosten te verlagen voor consumenten en een circulaire economie te bevorderen. Wetgeving over het recht op reparatie kan verband houden met een hele waaier aan thema’s en omstandigheden: zo is er het recht op reparatie tijdens de wettelijke garantieperiode, het recht op reparatie nadat die periode is verstreken en het recht op reparatie voor consumenten, die zelf hun producten repareren.

Green bonds are committed to financing or re-financing investments, projects, expenditure or assets helping to address climate and environmental issues. Recovery Assistance for Cohesion and the Territories of Europe package (REACT-EU) is an initiative that continues and extends the EU response to the coronavirus crisis and crisis repair measures.

On 18 November 2020, the European Parliament and the Council concluded negotiations on providing assistance to foster crisis repair in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its social consequences, and preparing a green, digital and resilient recovery of the EU economy.

REACT-EU will provide €47,5 billion over the next two years. The resources will be made available through the EU Structural Funds, with €37.5 billion allocated for 2021 and €10 billion for 2022.

Resources will be allocated in accordance with the partnership principle, involving local and regional authorities, as well as relevant bodies representing civil society and social partners.

While several donor countries have suspended their UNRWA funding, the EU said it will take a decision in light of the outcome of the investigation announced by the UN and its subsequent actions.
