During the EP plenary session (16- 19 April 2018) in Strasbourg, MEPs discuss and vote the so-called “waste package” to build a circular economy where household waste ends up being recycled and reused. SOUNDBITE (Italian), Simona BONAF&#200; (S&amp;D, IT), rapporteur , Setting standards is taking into account the whole life of a product and we set the goal of changing business and consumer behaviour. For the first time Member states will be forced to follow an agreed legislative action and there is no way back. Now the main aspect is waste packaging, for the first time we send a maximum figure of 10% for landfill waste and separation of organic; textile and hazardous waste. I must also recall that for the first time in EU legislation we are setting reference to costly problem of gas cleaning, but also ethical problem of the waste of food.

The transition towards a circular economy will allow us to become leaders in the world and avoid nearly reacting to events, we have to play this role of leadership in fighting climate change as committed to in the COP21.
