Trade and economic relations with Turkey: extracts from the exchange of views

SOUNDBITE (Bulgarian), Metin KAZAK (ALDE, BG), The relation between Turkey and the EU have reached quite an advanced level. the customs union is part and price of these relations the track record is positive but the customs union is to be future improved to review of the existing dispute resolution mechanism.

SOUNDBITE (German), Godelieve QUISTHOUDT-ROWOHL (EPP, DE), I think we should mention that the intellectual property rights should be better implemented. This is the situation in Turkey as in other countries. The legal situation is all right and proper but it isn't implemented precisely as it could be, and as a result I'm going to write an amendment on this. It is a difficult situation Turkey is in the customs union and we want to conclude a hole series of agreements with them but to be quite honest there is still a long way from full membership to the EU.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), Francesca BALZANI (S&amp;D, IT), There are areas of complementarities between the EU and Turkey . I think there is a great deal of potential in the differences between us and in our linkage with them. But obviously the customs union doesn't cover sensitive areas such as public procurement ad intellectual property rights. Those have to be carefully examined. There are significant signs of protectionism which might undermine the sensitive areas of cooperation between our states
