SOUNDBITE (English), Bartosz ARLUKOKOWICZ (EPP, PL), Chair of the BECA Special committee, Our task is very difficult and challenging. But I believe that we will achieve our goals. Cancer is still present in our lives. We face it ourselves, have members of our families that suffered from cancer. And will suffer from it. This is a symbolic day for me. Exactly six months ago, exactly six months ago, my father died of a very serious cancer. I don't have to convince anybody how important it is to fight this illness.

SOUNDBITE (Polish) Bartosz ARŁUKOWICZ (EPP, PL) This is a very important day not only for the European Parliament but for all of us patients living in Europe. This uniqueness is that the European Parliament is setting up a special commission on the fight against cancer. And this is the moment parliament will deal thoroughly with the fight against cancer. A murderer who murders many patients in Europe. 1.3 million people every year in Europe die of cancer. It is our task, our duty, our challenge to be effective. The international fight against this deadly disease. I myself am a doctor for many years I worked on pediatric oncology engaged in the treatment of tumors in children many years. And I know how important international cooperation is. Common standards, access to modern innovations, to modern drugs and that is our job. .

SOUNDBITE (Polish) Bartosz ARŁUKOWICZ (EPP, PL) There are several priorities for the work of this committee. Above all, building an international collaboration in the fight against cancer. This is key. On our own and alone, we will never prevail with this disease. Secondly build common standards. Understand cancer treatment battle for modern technologies innovation. But also access to modern forms of treatment and medicines. Preparing at last a recommendation to the Member states, for the Commission and for all of us the best standards for handling cancer patients. In patients who are not already ill, and may need to conduct a diagnostic examination, but also for patients after the completed chemotherapy treatment after the completed treatment. These are the priorities we will work out in this committee.
