François Mitterrand was elected President of France in 1981 and re-elected in 1988. During his presidency, the Berlin Wall fell, Europe reunited, enlarged to 15 Member States and became the European Union. In the last months of his mandate, he shared his vision for Europe with the European Parliament, culminating in a moving plea for peace.
