During the EP plenary session (11-15 December 2017) in Strasbourg, MEPs vote on recommendations to stamp out practices enabling tax evasion and optimisation, as exposed by the “Panama Papers”. Wrapping up 18 months’ work, the PANA committee calls for better regulation of financial intermediaries, better protection of whistle-blowers and a single definition of tax havens. SOUNDBITE (English), Jeppe KOFOD (S&amp;D, DK), Co-rapporteur, Briefly, I just want to thank all my colleagues in this parliament, we are reaching a milestone in the fight against money laundering, tax evasion and tax avoidance with the adoption of these recommendations against this these phenomena. And I want to thank my co-rapporteur Petr JEZEK and the rest of the PANA committee for 1,5 years of hard work on this issue. We have chance now to see whether it is not only talk but also action in the fight against tax evasion and money laundering. We need to put an end to the race to the bottom on corporate taxation and regulation in Europe. We need to put an end to the situation where the super rich global corrupt tax law they are above the tax law and above the law as such.This is a chance in this parliament to show that we are on the side of the citizens and I hope that you will all vote for this recommendation and give a strong signal to Europe and to the rest of the world.
