After a series of special committees and a committee of inquiry, created to delve into the various tax leaks and scandals of recent years, Parliament established a more permanent setup to shed light on the matter.

The Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) subcommittee on tax matters, FISC, will be composed of 30 members. It will deal particularly with the fight against tax fraud, tax evasion and tax avoidance, as well as financial transparency for taxation purposes.

The constituent meeting will take place on Wednesday, 23 September 2020.

The Czech Republic has been an EU member country since 1st May 2004.

The Czech Republic is a parliamentary republic with a head of government - the Prime Minister - and a head of state - the President. The country was formed in 1993, after Czechoslovakia was split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. There are 21 members of the European Parliament from the Czech Republic.

Situated in the north-eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea and to the south of Turkey, Cyprus is the largest island in the eastern Mediterranean as well as being the third smallest country in the EU, after Malta and Luxembourg.

The Republic of Estonia obtained it's independence in 1991 and entered the EU on the 1st May 2004

After the signature of a European agreement and the filing of an application in 1995, the accession negotiations began in March 1998. Reforms have been undertaken during all the accession process to improve the national economic performance. The entry of Estonia in the EU was approved by referendum by a large majority on 14th September 2003.

Estonia has 6 MEPs, is represented by 4 voices to the Council and it adopted the Euro on the 1st January 2011. On 15 November 2007, the application of the Schengen acquis to Estonia is approved in plenary session.

Václav Havel, (Czech, born in Prague, 5 October 1936 - died 18 December 2011) was a playwright and essayist, as well as a prominent dissident during the Communist era. He was one of the founders of Charter 77 and of VONS (the Committee for the Defence of the Unjustly Prosecuted). In 1989, he became the last President of Czechoslovakia and, later, President of the Czech Republic (1993 - 2003).

From January to June 2022, France holds the Presidency of the EU Council, following the Slovenian&nbsp;Presidency and preceding the Czech Presidency.&nbsp; During January plenary session MEPs discussed&nbsp;with French President Emmanuel Macron the political strategy and aims of France’s six-month helm of the EU. France’s ministers are present their priorities in a series of meetings with parliamentary committees in January.

The motto of the&nbsp;French Presidency&nbsp;is “Recovery, Strength and a Sense of Belonging”, to underline that, in order to fight the health crisis, the rise of aggressive foreign powers and climate disruption, the best response is a European response. In terms of EU legislation, France plans to give priority to negotiations on the new Digital Services and Markets Acts, the establishment of an adjustment system for carbon pricing at the EU’s borders, and on common minimum wages rules. The&nbsp;Conference on the Future of Europe&nbsp;is expected to deliver its proposals in the course of the French Presidency semester in the first half of 2022. The Presidency of the Council rotates among the EU member states every 6 months. During this 6-month period, the Presidency chairs meetings at every level in the Council, helping to ensure the continuity of the EU's work.&nbsp;

Valéry Giscard d'Estaing&nbsp;(2 February 1926 - 2 December 2020) was a French politician and President of the French Republic from 1974 to 1981.

He served as a member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 1993, being a Member of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party Group. He was also the President of the European Convention from 2002 to 2003.

On 2nd of December 2021, the European Parliament organised&nbsp;a ceremony in Strasbourg as a tribute to&nbsp;Valery Giscard d'Estaing. This date commemorates the 1st anniversary of his death.

Faced with a growing international terrorist threat, the European Union (EU) is playing an ever more ambitious role in counter-terrorism.&nbsp;Even though primary responsibility for combating crime and ensuring security lies with the Member States, the EU provides cooperation, coordination and (to some extent) harmonisation tools, as well as financial support, to address this borderless phenomenon.

EU spending in the area of counter-terrorism has increased over the years and is set to grow in the future, to allow for better cooperation between national law enforcement authorities and enhanced support by the EU bodies in charge of security, such as Europol and eu-LISA.

The action plan to reinforce the fight against the financing of terrorism focuses on two main strands of action: tracing terrorists through financial movements and preventing them from moving funds or other assets and disrupting the sources of revenue used by terrorist organisations, by targeting their capacity to raise funds.

In April the European Parliament adopted a new regulation that will target content such as texts, images, sound recordings or videos, including live transmissions, that incite, solicit or contribute to terrorist offences, provide instructions for such offences or solicit people to participate in a terrorist group. It will also cover material that provides guidance on how to make and use explosives, firearms and other weapons for terrorist purposes.

Hosting service providers will have to remove or disable access to flagged terrorist content in all member states within one hour of receiving a removal order from the competent authority. Member states will adopt rules on penalties, the degree of which will take into account the nature of the breach and the size of company responsible.

Fight against terrorism

With increasing population growth, rapid urbanization, climate change and environmental degradation, a growing number of people and resources are exposed to natural disasters.MEPs have supported different initiatives to help member states respond faster and more effectively to emergencies and disasters. The European Parliament is also impelled to aid and supervise reconstruction efforts in regions affected by natural disasters both within the EU and abroad.

Malta joined the European Union 1st May 2004 and it has been a member of the Schengen area since 21st December 2007.

Malta is a single-chamber parliamentary republic with a head of government - the prime minister - and a head of state - the president - whose role is largely ceremonial. The country is divided into 5 regions. Each has its own regional committee, which serves as the intermediary between local and national government.

The constitutive meetings of the European Parliament's standing committees and subcommittees take place in Brussels on 10 July 2019, following the appointment of their members in the plenary sitting of 3-4 July. During the meetings, each committee and subcommittee will elect its respective bureau, made up of a Chair and Vice-Chairs, for a two-and-a-half year mandate. The newly set up committees will then start holding their regular meetings during the week of 22 July.

&nbsp;The hearings of Commissioners-designate started&nbsp;on 4 November and take place until 12 November.&nbsp;

The European Parliament invites Commissioners-designate to appear before the appropriate committees for hearings in order to scrutinise if they are suitable for the posts they have been assigned to.&nbsp; Ahead of the hearings, Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs scrutinised&nbsp;the declarations of interests of the Commissioners-designate.&nbsp;

The hearings are&nbsp;followed by meetings in which the committee chair and group representatives (coordinators) of the various committees&nbsp;assess whether a Commissioner-designate is qualified both to be a member of the College and to carry out the particular duties they have been assigned.

Once all hearings are completed, the Conference of Committee Chairs will assess the outcome of the confirmation hearings and forward its conclusions to the Conference of Presidents. The latter will conduct the final evaluation and decide whether to close the hearings. After the hearings have been concluded, Commission President-elect Ursula von der Leyen will present the full College of Commissioners and its programme in plenary.

The alleged attempts to influence MEPs unveiled loopholes in Parliament’s internal rules, alongside other issues, says&nbsp;Special Committee on Foreign Interference. Interference attempts are a “widespread phenomenon that must be countered as vigorously as possible”, warn MEPs, expressing their “deep shock and condemnation of the allegations of corruption, money laundering and participation in a criminal organisation” by three MEPs, one former MEP and one parliamentary assistant.

The committee has identified “numerous loopholes in Parliament’s integrity and transparency rules” and calls for President Metsola’s&nbsp;14-point proposal to&nbsp;reform Parliament’s rules to be put into concrete actions as soon as possible.

MEPs demand also that compliance with the six-month cooling-off period for former MEPs should be monitored by the new&nbsp;EU ethics body. Parliament should introduce a monitoring system and rules for revoking access for former MEPs who lobby on behalf of high-risk countries beyond the cooling-off period.

Parliament has also reacted to corruption&nbsp;allegations &nbsp;with immediate changes and demands for measures to close loopholes in existing transparency rules. In&nbsp;&nbsp;December 2022,&nbsp;Parliament&nbsp;adopted a resolution on the suspicions of corruption by Qatar and the broader need for more transparency in the EU institutions.

Fight against corruption, corruption and money laundering

In March 2021, the European Commission adopted the Strategy for the rights of persons with disabilities 2021-2030. The Strategy builds on the results of the previous European Disability Strategy 2010-2020, which paved the way to a barrier-free Europe and to empower persons with disabilities so they can enjoy their rights and participate fully in society and economy.

Despite the progress made in the past decade, persons with disabilities still face considerable barriers and have a higher risk of poverty and social exclusion.

The objective of this Strategy is to progress towards ensuring that all persons with disabilities in Europe, regardless of their sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, age or sexual orientation enjoy their human rights, have equal opportunities, equal access to participate in society and economy, are able to decide where, how and with whom they live, move freely in the EU regardless of their support needs and no longer experience discrimination.

The EU and its Member States are committed to improving social and economic situation of disabled people building on the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU and on the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU. The European Union and all its Member States are party to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).

European Disability Strategy

The EU has developed a policy to support the gradual integration of the Western Balkan countries with the Union. The EU aims to promote peace, stability and economic development in the region&nbsp;and open up the prospect of EU integration.

In order to apply for EU membership a country has to be European and respect the EU’s democratic values. It also needs stable institutions guaranteeing democracy and the rule of law; a functioning market economy; and the ability to take on and carry out the obligations of EU membership.

Parliament is fully involved in the Stabilisation and Association Process &nbsp;and must also consent to any new accession to the EU. In addition, through its budgetary powers, it has direct influence over the amounts allocated to the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance. Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs appoints standing rapporteurs for all candidate and potential candidate countries. Parliament expresses its positions on enlargement in the form of annual resolutions responding to the Commission’s latest annual country reports.

On 1&nbsp;July&nbsp;2013, Croatia became the first of the seven countries to join, and Montenegro, Serbia, the Republic of North Macedonia and Albania are official candidates. Accession negotiations and chapters have been opened with Montenegro and Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo are potential candidate countries.

Raffaele Fitto was a Member of the European Parliament (1999-2000, 2014-2022) and became Co-Chair of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR) of the European Parliament in 2019. He was the Italian Minister for European Affairs, Southern Italy, Cohesion Policy and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) from 2022 to present, and he is now Executive Vice-President-designate of the European Commission for Cohesion and Reforms, for the von der Leyen Commission II.

EU Leaders meet in Budapest for an informal European Council meeting. Competitiveness is on top of the agenda and is discussed in depth during an informal meeting of Heads of State or Government on 8 November 2024, which is expected to result in a ‘Budapest Declaration’.

The European Political Community (EPC) is a political platform designed to foster cooperation among European countries that share the European Union's fundamental values. Proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron during the closing ceremony of the Conference on the Future of Europe in May 2022, the EPC held its first meeting in Prague in October 2022.

The discussions will be on the security challenges, followed by four breakout sessions on the topics of migration and economic security. The session on migration will cover all aspects of migration, while the one on economic security will also discuss connectivity in terms of energy, transport, IT and also global trade.

Europos Parlamento nariai aptarė svarbią ataskaitą, kurioje raginama imtis skubių veiksmų, skirtų ES ekonomikos konkurencingumui stiprinti. 
Ataskaitos autorius, buvęs Europos centrinio banko vadovas Mario Draghi, tvirtino, kad ES atsilieka nuo JAV ir Kinijos dėl lėto augimo, aukštų energijos kainų ir grėsmių jos saugumui. 
Strasbūre susirinkusiems Europos Parlamento nariams jis sakė, kad norint skatinti inovacijas, išlaikyti gyvenimo lygį ir išsaugoti europietišką gyvenimo būdą kasmet reikia papildomų 800 mlrd. eurų investicijų. 
Daugelis Europos Parlamento narių pritarė M. Draghi raginimui imtis veiksmų, o kai kurie reikalavo daugiau paramos svarbiausioms ekonomikos šakoms ir žaliajai bei skaitmeninei pertvarkai. Kiti pasisakė už laisvesnes rinkas ir įspėjo, kad kovos su klimato kaita priemonės gali pakenkti ekonomikos augimui.

2022 metais Rusijai pradėjus plataus masto karinę invaziją į Ukrainą, Europos Sąjunga ir toliau remia Ukrainos žmones, priima pabėgėlius, teikia gynybos įrangą bei finansinę pagalbą. Naudodamasis ES finansavimu, Čekijoje dirbantis IT dėstytojas Kamilas kuria Skaitmeninio universiteto platformą, leidžiančią studentams iš Ukrainos tęsti studijas internetu.
Olena ir toliau studijuoja Europos Sąjungoje pagal „Erasmus+“ programą. Taip pat ji yra jaunoji Europos ambasadorė Gdanske (Lenkija).

Tokios ES ekonomikos gaivinimo ir atsparumo didinimo priemonės lėšomis finansuojamos iniciatyvos yra stipresnės ir į krizes geriau reaguojančios Europos pagrindas.

2024 m. liepos mėn. Europos Parlamentas patvirtino Ursulą von der Leyen antrajai Komisijos pirmininkės kadencijai. Ji vadovaus Komisijos narių komandai, kurią sudaro po vieną narį iš kiekvienos ES valstybės narės ir kuri per ateinančius penkerius metus siūlys ES teisės aktus bei stebės, kaip jie įgyvendinami.    
 
Europos Komisijos pirmininko rinkimai yra vienas pirmųjų Parlamento darbų, atliekamų iš karto po Europos Parlamento rinkimų. 
    
ES šalių vadovai, atsižvelgdami į Europos Parlamento rinkimų rezultatus, siūlo kandidatą į Komisijos pirmininkus.    
   
Kandidatui turi pritarti Parlamentas – slaptame balsavime už jį ar ją turi balsuoti dauguma ir dar vienas Parlamento narys.   
   
Kandidatui nesurinkus reikiamos balsų daugumos, Europos Vadovų Taryba per mėnesį turi pasiūlyti kitą kandidatą.

Europos Parlamentas perrinko Ursulą von der Leyen Komisijos pirmininke

Kas yra Roberta Metsola, kuri 2024 m. liepos mėn. buvo antrą kartą išrinkta Europos Parlamento pirmininke? Kaip ji buvo pasirinkta ir koks jos vaidmuo? 
 
Kas dvejus su puse metų Europos Parlamentas išrenka asmenį, atstovausiantį Parlamentui bendraujant su kitomis ES institucijomis ir platesniu pasauliu. Parlamento pirmininkas renkamas slaptu balsavimu per pirmąją po rinkimų plenarinę sesiją.
 
Šios pareigos pavedamos absoliučią balsų daugumą surinkusiam kandidatui. 
 
Pirmininkas vadovauja Parlamento veiklai, pirmininkauja plenarinėms sesijoms ir skelbia, kad ES biudžetas galutinai priimtas. Be kita ko, pirmininkas išdėsto Parlamento nuomonę kiekvieno Europos Vadovų Tarybos posėdžio pradžioje.

Liberijos vadovė Ellen Johnson Sirleaf paprašė tarptautinės pagalbos, kad po 14 metų trukusio pilietinio karo jos šalyje vėl negrįžtų smurtas. Pirmoji Afrikos valstybės prezidente išrinkta moteris kreipėsi į Europos Parlamentą 2006 m. rugsėjį, praėjus vos aštuoniems mėnesiams po to, kai pradėjo eiti pareigas. Ji sakė, kad liberiečiai yra pasiryžę pamiršti konfliktą, kuris baigėsi 2003 m. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf kalba apie Liberiją | Europos Parlamentas

Nobelio taikos premijos laureatas Denisas Mukvegė smerkia prievartavimus ir smurtą prieš moteris, kurie naudojami kaip karo ginklai. Jis yra Panzi ligoninės Bukavu mieste, Kongo Demokratinėje Respublikoje, įkūrėjas. Kaip ginekologas jis padėjo tūkstančiams moterų, šioje šalyje nukentėjusių nuo seksualinio smurto ir smurto dėl lyties. Dr. Mukvegės veiklą Europos Parlamentas įvertino 2014 m. jam skirdamas Sacharovo premiją už minties laisvę. Po ketverių metų jam buvo suteikta Nobelio taikos premija.
