SOUNDBITE (English), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, I think this is a good day for the EU and for Canada after long time, long journey, after a long time of negotiations we are finally at a stage, we're at that moment of signature. Today, represents a moment where we create a standard for future international trade agreements, bringing rules into what we call globalisation. Saving our standards, our environmental standards our social standards, our consumer protection standards, our agriculture standards on the hand and open new chapters of trade and commerce on the other side, that's a good day.

A lot of the concerns of the citizens all over Europe have now been put on record by the Walloon government, and what we have also shown this past week, and that is very important to me, that this is not a cold power machine. The European Parliament has in the past week tried to show that we react to the concerns of citizens, and therefore we have in the past week for sure improved the treaty a bit. And that is also due to the will of the Canadian government for its part, for this treaty to set best standards in view of the future levels of rules in globalisation.

SOUNDBITE (French), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, It is finally an improved CETA, and clarified. There were so many questions that were raised here in Belgium and elsewhere, but finally the responses that were given, either in the negotiations inside Belgium, or in the negotiations in the COREPER, the Comittee of permanent representatives, the day before yesterday for all the 28, has led to a clarification of the treaty which was, visibly necessary, and which will now create a sort of standard for international treaties.
