Under President's Sassoli's leadership, the EP has been a key partner in the global climate fights declaring a global climate and environmental emergency and urge all EU nations to commit to reaching zero emission by 2050. President Sassoli we look forward to hearing from you.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), David SASSOLI, EP President, Thank you for this meeting for this exchange of views and also of experiences. We have started this season so difficult, having already begun a good reflection on certain objectives that the European Union intends to achieve.

Democracy cannot be suspended, despite the Covid also, that there is a need more than ever for international parliamentary cooperation because democracy remains fashionable.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), David SASSOLI, EP President, We started this European legislature looking for a reading of contemporary life, and we found it in a reflection that involved all the European institutions. The key for us is to save the planet and we have set ourselves an ambitious goal, to succeed in 2050 to be a zero-emission continent.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), David SASSOLI, EP President, We want to converge all our efforts towards this goal. The Green Deal proposal also helped us at this time of Covid. We understand that  with our countries, with our Member States, we need to convert all energies to achieve common goals.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), David SASSOLI, EP President, Ecological transformation, for us, must go hand in hand with sustainability, economic sustainability, social sustainability and fighting inequality. I believe that at this time we should also think together about some instruments that do not give the measure of combating inequality.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), David SASSOLI, EP President, The reference to GDP is no longer sufficient we need new indicators that relate, for example, to the fact that growth cannot be infinite that well-being can be measured on some parameters that concern training, social sustainability or combating inequality.
