SOUNDBITE (Italian), Marco AFFRONTE (EFDD, IT), "European Commission's position was clear: total prohibition on the use of all driftnets for fishing in the EU. As almost all MEPs raised criticisms on this total ban, I worked on a more comprehensive proposal, taking into account several considerations: sustainability and protection of the environment, but also the fact that there are some small local fishery communities where these driftnets are used properly and sustainably, so they can't be included in the total ban".
