The European Parliament’s LUX Prize rewards films about any issues concerning Europe. The wining film will be subtitled in all official EU languages, which will allow it to be screened in countries where it would otherwise not have been understood.

It's in a cinema that the films shortlisted   for the 2009 LUX Prize was announced.

Every year the European Parliament gives   a prize rewarding a European film.

It's not only about a trophy, the LUX Prize   supports the broadcasting of the winner.

The European Parliament is a player   on the European cultural scene.

But as soon as you leave the Parliament   no one knows that the EP sets the norms

for royalties, broadcasting and contents.

The EP can remove barriers which stop   the broadcasting of the works.

That's what the LUX Prize is about.   It illustrates the European debate

the films are about Europe,   which questions the European in us,

to bring some life to the European debate.

It also helps the broadcasting of the films.

The winner receives a trophy   in the hemicycle in Strasbourg

but also wins subtitling in all   of the EP's working languages.

So a film which would never have left   Latvia or Hungary

can be screened anywhere.   It promotes European cinematography.

For this third edition, the LUX Prize   will move out of the EP buildings.

Partnerships were organised   with different festivals

including the Brussels   European Film Festival.

The idea is to get closer to the public.

We're working for the same cause, so   every day we have a LUX Prize screening

for the winners of previous years,   and films selected this year.

The idea is to give these films   and this programme a showcase.

The 10 shortlisted films   for the 2009 LUX Prize

will be visible in a cultural centre   of the European capital,

from 28 June in 'Studio 4' place Flagey,   in Brussels.
