SOUNDBITE (French) Joseph DAUL (EPP, FR), chairman of the EPP group: "My expectations of these European elections are, first of all, the participation. We have now already the result of Netherlands, at least there the participation has not chuted. I wish that in France the participation will not chute neither, I hope that the participation will augment in France, and that the deception of these recent years ends. It's very important for a democracy, the participation of elections. This is the first point. For the second point, of course, I wait for the victory of the EPP group, so that we'll be able to propose the candidature of  Jean-Claude Juncker. I think we have to wait until midnight to get to know the result. I'm very confident, but my father told me :"In the elections, the votes are counted, not weighted. "So it'll be better to wait until midnight."

SOUNDBITE (French) Joseph DAUL (EPP, FR), chairman of the EPP group: "The greatest satisfaction of my career in the European Parliament is the integration of the ten new countries. In the future, these countries will give Europe a new shock. When I was in the election campaign in Estonia, Estonia and Poland, I sensed another kind of European esprit, not like the one in certain parts of the France, where people reject Europe, where they say that all problems come from Europe. I don't understand why. But in Estonia, there is hope, the hope is peace. I would say that after 70 years of peace, after the Nobel Prize of Peace, I think it's very important. What I regret, it's that we did not accomplish the energy politic, and we did not accomplish the security politic of defense. I suppose that in the next ten years, these should be the principal topics of Europe if we wish to exist. So more fiscal and social harmonizations, energy politic and defense politic."

SOUNDBITE (French) Joseph DAUL(EPP, FR), chairman of the EPP group: "What is important for the next European Parliament, first of all, I think it should be the fiscal and social harmonization. This is the most important. I didn't say the standardisation, but harmonization, because without this we could not face to the delocalisation. The second point, the energy politic. It's very important when we look at what happens now in Ukraine, with Poutine. We should have an energy security, an energy solidarity between us in Europe. This is one of the principal topics. And the defense politic. Because we want to make Schengen Zone better. The notion of Schengen Zone is very good, and we should make it work. We should make effective the notion of borders, the Mediterranean border, so that there should not be so many dead in these small boats. We have not take a lot of actions in this domain, so this should be another principal topic."
