Digital Single Market: extracts from the debate

SOUNDBITE (English), Andrus ANSIP, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Digital Single Market, Consumers as well as business deserve better. They should not be limited to their domestic markets. They should be able to make the best of the opportunities offered by the Europe single market on digital age.

SOUNDBITE (English), Andrus ANSIP, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Digital Single Market, It will prevent unjustified discrimination on line, as well as off line. In a true single market you should not be discriminated against based on your nationality or place of establishment. However that does not mean making company sell or deliver goods in every EU market. If a consumer comes to their on line stores they should be treated as they were local, not treat differently. Traders will not be required to deliver cross border, but to sell as they were costumers from their own country.

It means that if we see an issue in relations with copy rights we solve it in our copy rights rules. If there is an issue related to telecoms we solve it in our telecom package. The first steps in this have already been taken today with our proposal on audio-visual media services directive where online platforms are part of this instruments new scope.

SOUNDBITE (German), Evelyne GEBHARDT (S&amp;D, DE), MEP 4 - 8th parliamentary terms, We also need to see something else in this package, we need strong support for consumers, we need greater transparency for online trade and purchases so that citizens are not struggling with a lack of transparency or grappling with hidden fees that they want see through an altar and that it end up the whole process receive notice from the seller that they cannot deliver to the member state in question because the delivery fees are too high.
