Backstage: European Year of Citizens

Long life to Europe!  Long life to its citizens and to you!

This year Europe is honouring  its citizens - you!

If you have the nationality  of one of the EU Member States,

in addition to your national citizenship  you have European citizenship.

Europe is a team  which works together, lives together,

the rule of law, equality,  human rights, and solidarity.

To celebrate this, 2013 has been named  the European Year of Citizens.

Europe is giving you a voice.  Make the most of it.

Impressive, huh? I bet you didn't think  I could give a speech like that.

Maybe one day I'll be elected to  the Parliament. Don't laugh, it's possible.

Every EU citizen is entitled  to stand for election to the EP.

It's one of your rights,  and you have plenty of others.

Here are some of  the most important ones.

I can move and live anywhere  within the Member States.

I can study or work  in another Member State.

I can vote in the European Parliament  elections when I'm old enough.

I'm diplomatically protected  in a non-EU country

I can send a petition  to the European Parliament.

What does being an EU citizen  mean to you?

Well, the institutions  are interested in you.

They want to know your ideas  and what you want.

That's how  the Year of Citizens was born.

It's time to take a mic  and get your opinions. Off we go.

Everything. As I said before,  the diversity of cultures.

Freedom of movement is good.  -Fraternity between different countries.

2013 is the European Year of Citizens.  Did you know?

Actually I had no idea.  -No, not at all.

I would like to know more,  but for now I have no idea what it is.

What do you think  are the rights of EU citizens?

The right to vote when you're 18.  -There are more personal rights.

It's easy to travel to other countries.  -Freedom of speech.

I didn't even know  we had European rights, so no idea.

Well, us... I don't really know.  -The European Parliament?

It would be good if it was us,  because they're rights that concern us.

They look for solutions  to the problems we have now.

I don't know.  -They work for the future.

They do more work than people think,  but I don't know what.

Manage the economy better.  -Promotion of the arts.

I would have more representation, please,  for younger people.

People to be more open  towards each other.

Solidarity in Europe.  -I hope it will be better and grow.

People to accept each other.  -Become an immense power.

So, dear citizens,  find out about your rights

and get involved in the European project.
