Following his inauguration on 20 January 2025, President Trump signed a large number of executive orders setting the priorities of the new US administration, including the country’s withdrawal from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Paris Agreement on climate change mitigation. MEPs discuss with Commission and Council representatives the recently tabled EU strategy to regain competitiveness and secure sustainable prosperity. This so-called “Competitiveness Compass” contains three core areas for action: innovation, decarbonisation, and security. MEPs outline proposals to improve the protection of EU citizens against exposure to second-hand smoke and aerosols, including from electronic cigarettes. In Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, the Commission has previously announced its intention to update the current Council Recommendation on smoke-free environments, which dates back to 20019. A revision was needed to extend its scope to certain emerging products, such as electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco, due to the rapid market growth and appeal of such products in recent years, especially among young people. The Commission recommends EU countries reduce the risk of second-hand exposure by banning the use of all tobacco products in certain outdoor spaces, such as public playgrounds and amusement parks, areas related to restaurants/cafés, public transportation, healthcare and education establishments, as well as workplaces.

Smoke and aerosol-free environments: MEPs debate

MEPs discuss with the Commission the conclusions of the UN COP29 Climate Change Conference held in Baku from 11 to 22 November. Parliament adopted its demands for the COP29 at the first November plenary session. An EP delegation is in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 18 to 22 November, to participate in this year’s climate change conference. The main aim of the gathering is to provide an overview of current progress on the Paris Agreement and agree on new financial resources to support global climate action.
