SOUNDBITE (German), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, The three films which we shortlisted last year, remind us that what unites Europeans is much stronger than that which divides us. In Europe we have different cultures, and protecting and maintaining these is important because in its diversity lies the strength of Europe.

SOUNDBITE (German), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, Through the subtitling of the short listed films in the 24 official languages of EU, the European Parliament is helping these remarkable films to be seen in all 28 member states and to make it accessible. And thereby cinema buffs in Europe can be reached and possibly it would not have been possible without our support.

SOUNDBITE (English), Maren Ade, Winner of the 2016 LUX film prize, I don't know if there is a European Cinema, but I'm very happy to be an European filmmaker because I can be German and part of something bigger at the same time.

SOUNDBITE (English), Maren Ade, Winner of the 2016 LUX film prize, I'm truly grateful to have the luck to live in a part of the world with democratic institutions that defend the arts and their freedom, irrespective of their immediate economic value. (Applause)
