1. HYDROVILLE, Antwerpen, Belgium (I-192418)Hydroville is the first certified passenger shuttle that uses hydrogen to power a diesel engine. Hydrogen has the advantage that no CO2, particulate matter or sulphur oxides are released when burning it.The shuttle will be mainly used as a platform to test hydrogen-technology for commercial sea going vessels.

2. DON QUICHOTE PROJECT, Halle, Belgium (I-193768)The EU-funded Don Quichote project (Demonstration Of New Qualitative Innovative Concept of Hydrogen Out of wind Turbin Electricity), that ran from 2012 till 2018, demonstrated that the use of hydrogen as a large scale renewable energy storage solution has technical and economic viability. The project was funded by the EU's Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking. It represents an interesting commercial opportunity to connect intermittent renewable electricity to transport applications. The Don Quichote demonstration plant was implemented at a large logistic center of Colruyt Group in Halle, near Brussels (BE). The plant at this center is interconnected to an existing hydrogen refueling facility that supplies hydrogen to a fleet of material handling vehicles. It receives energy from renewable energy sources: wind and solar power. In the project, components of an existing hydrogen refueling system were replaced by innovative, more efficient components, and integrated with a renewable energy source, thereby realizing a renewable energy storage capacity based on hydrogen. By storing excess renewable electricity in large quantities in the form of hydrogen, renewable energy can be effectively used for mobility, grid balancing, and fuel cell material handling vehicles. By demonstrating the impact on efficiency and costs of the operations of a large logistics center, the project demonstrated the market readiness of the components needed for storing renewable energy in hydrogen.

3. REFHYNE PROJECT, Cologne, Germany (I-192757)The EU-funded Refhyne project is constructing the largest &lsquo;proton exchange membrane&rsquo; (PEM) hydrogen electrolysis plant in the world in Cologne, Germany. The electrolyser will use renewable electricity to produce clean hydrogen. The project, which is funded through the EU &lsquo;Fuel Cell Hydrogen Joint Undertaking&rsquo;, is expected to be in operation in early 2021. Based on water and electric power and with a maximum capacity of 10 megawatts, it will generate hydrogen on a large scale: about 4 tonnes of hydrogen per day and about 1,300 tonnes per year in total.
